Safeguarding Information

Statement 17th November 2024

This week the media has been full of stories of abuse by a church leader and the resignation of Archbishop Justin Welby who did not act to stop this when he first found out. This has brought up many feelings for all of us and has raised questions about the state of safeguarding in the church today.

Our prayers and thoughts are with survivors of abuse and all those affected by similar cases. I would ask you also to pray for those tasked with leading our church nationally and locally, that we will have wisdom and determination to ensure safeguarding for all.

If anyone is wanting to talk, please feel free to speak with me, our Parish Safeguarding Officer or other members of the leadership team.

There are full statements available from the National Safeguarding Lead, Bishop Joanne Grenfell and the Archbishop of York, Stephen Cottrell.

Rev Mike Cansdale

The Diocese of York is committed to safeguarding children and young people, vulnerable adults and those in abusive relationships. We aim to create safe environments, where children and young people are nurtured and protected and where all people, especially those who may be vulnerable for any reason, are able to worship and pursue their faith journey with encouragement and in safety.

We follow the national legal and procedural framework for safeguarding children and vulnerable adults, and Church of England policy and practice guidance.

We act promptly on any complaints made, and work in close partnership with police and social care services where children or vulnerable adults have been harmed or are at risk of harm or mistreatment.

We provide safe recruitment, training and support to our voluntary and paid workers with children and vulnerable adults. We care for those who have been abused in the past, and minister appropriately to those who have abused.
